At Matauri Bay Retreat we offer creative, peaceful spaces to rest, work, or simply get away. Guided by our philosophy of useLess, we shape beauty from what’s been recycled and reloved — weaving together rustic farm buildings, soulful design, and quiet connection to the land.

Your hosts, Teresa the artist and Pierre the builder, have reimagined this 30-acre farm above Matauri Bay into a place where life slows down and the Far North works its quiet magic. You’ll find two unique retreats here:

• The Shearer’s Cottage — a restored cottage with art on the walls, polished wooden floors, and sunsets from the veranda.
• Studio 1 @ The Shearing Shed — the old farm shed reimagined as a light-filled studio, blending rustic bones with creative detail.

Step outside to a peaceful rural landscape, sweeping ocean views, dramatic skies and bush regeneration in progress, . We’ll leave you to the peace and privacy, but we’re nearby if you’d like local tips — or a peek inside the artist’s studio.

The Shearer’s Cottage
A restored shearer’s cottage on a 30-acre farm above Matauri Bay — art on the walls, sunsets from the veranda, simple yet soulful. This private retreat blends rustic charm with thoughtful comforts: a hammock swaying on the veranda, polished wooden floors, and a cosy lounge lined with books and original art. Step outside to young orchards, a quiet lake, and rolling farmland that opens to sweeping ocean views and endless beaches just minutes away.

Studio 1 @ The Shearing Shed
Once the heart of the farm, the old shearing shed now holds a character-filled studio apartment for up to four. Rustic bones meet creative detail here — a pared-back but well-equipped kitchen, deep couches made for lingering, and a generous bath for soaking. A private deck looks out over fields and sea, perfect for sun-drenched afternoons or starlit nights. Like the cottage, it’s a space that’s simple yet soulful, offering room to rest, dream, and connect with the land.
